Brief History & Setting
Mošcenicka Draga is a municipality in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County in Croatia.
It lies under the Ucka mountain, on the eastern coast of Istria, along the Kvarner Bay. The town developed as a fishing port for Mošcenice, the old hill-town above.
The region is somewhat steep / mountainous inland; the territory includes many small villages/sela in the hills of Ucka.
Nature, Landscape & Trails
Because it lies where mountain meets sea, there’s a blend of marine/coastal scenery and lush Mediterranean / forested hillsides. Ucka Nature Park is immediately inland.
Some notable trails:
Ucka Trail — a well-known trail running event and hiking route that starts/ends in Mošcenicka Draga; mixes mountain and coastal views.
Vela Draga Educational Trail — running along a canyon (Vela Draga), offering lookout points and information about geology.
Trebišca-Perun Mythical-Historical Trail — goes through hamlets, natural landscapes, connects to Slavic myths, up over the slopes of Ucka. Good for full-day hikes.
Other local excursions: to Mošcenice (the hill-town), to smaller villages like Brsec, Potoki, Sucici, etc. - for nature, local life, views.
Beaches: the most famous is Sipar — a long pebble/white stone beach formed by a stream (Draška) carrying sands/pebbles from the slopes of Ucka. Also beach “Sv. Ivan” (St John) just south.
Typical Foods & Restaurants
Local food features a strong maritime / Adriatic coastal profile, with some mountain & forest products. Key food aspects:
Seafood is central: fresh fish, scampi (locally “Kvarner scampi / draški škampi”), often prepared in simple, high-quality fashions using olive oil, garlic, herbs.
Seasonal local produce: wild asparagus (spring), chestnuts (autumn / “maruni” chestnuts) are used in dishes and desserts.
Local taverns/restaurants: some names are Konoba Zijavica, Restaurant Johnson, Tavern Nostromo, Restaurant Sidro, Batela(n) etc.
A standout is the restaurant Zijavica, which combines fine cuisine with local ingredients: smoked/sardine tartare, fish fillets, octopus, scallops etc.
Shops & Markets
There are small local shops, markets, and stands along the beach and in town selling fresh produce, fish, souvenirs, olive oil, etc.
Weekly markets are common in Croatian coastal towns; in Mošcenicka Draga there are local markets (fruit, vegetables, fish) though not all are large commercial centres.
Also artisan / souvenir shops, small cafés, and places selling local food products (olive oil, wine, honey etc.).
Festivals, Events & Cultural Life
Summer is active: there are concerts, regattas, boat parades, traditional boat race / “Smotra i regata tradicijskih barki” in July.
Blues nights, local band concerts, events like “Teatrino pod zvjezdama” (theater under stars), “Best balcony/garden” competitions etc.
Culinary events: “Virada in piñata” (in Rovinj) included showcasing of Mošcenicka Draga’s dishes.
